Discover the coast and culture of Vallarta
Puerto Vallarta is home to unique handicrafts, fine art and a community of growing artisans. Puerto Vallarta residents import tons of fine folk crafts, locally crafted sculptures and paintings from all over Mexico. The beauty and culture of Puerto Vallarta inspires artisans who have opened up shops filled with these unique and beautiful treasures. Whether you’re looking for clothing, glass, art, jewelry, leather, sculptures or woodcarvings, Puerto Vallarta is the place to go.
Just north of Puerto Vallarta is the mystical mountain village of Nueva Valle, home to about 130 Huichol Indians. Said to be the last tribe in North America living as it did in pre-Columbian times, a visit here is a breathtaking experience. Huichol art is just as beautiful. Intricately woven and beaded designs are fascinating and unique pieces of art. Inspiration for their psychedelic-looking art is said to come from visions the Huichol people consider messages from God. The symbols, colors and patterns of this unique beaded and woven artwork are a must-see (and must-have).
Puerto Vallarta boasts the Museo del Cuale, another cultural destination. Set alongside the Cuale River, its excellent collections of pre-Hispanic objects are worthy or your time. While small in size, the Museo del Cuale offers a large look into Puerto Vallarta culture. A glimpse into pre-Hispanic cultures once living in the area, the exhibits contain beautiful pottery, artifacts, stones, art, clay figurines and other ancient objects.
Shopping for authentic Mexican crafts, art, clothes or jewelry can also be done on the resort’s very own beaches. Vendors specializing in a variety of art and jewelry making are passionate about they do. You can browse through the options and bargain with the vendors on the beach and bring home one-of-a-kind Mexican souvenirs.
